CHILDREN AND COVID-19(info up to date as of 5/14/2020)
While COVID-19 has appeared less severe in children, especially those without underlying health conditions, a new health issue has arisen in a small number of otherwise healthy children after infection with the novel coronavirus. Called pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS), it is an exaggerated immune response resulting in significant inflammation in organ systems. Children who have PIMS generally did not have obvious symptoms when they were infected with novel coronavirus, and generally were healthy prior to developing PIMS. PIMS is not contagious.
Symptoms of PIMS include high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea, and rash. The eyes, lips, and tongue may appear red. Feet and hands may be swollen and red. These signs occur about 6 weeks after a child may have been exposed to COVID-19, though keep in mind children may have few or no symptoms of a COVID-19 infection.
If your child experiences a high fever and any of the above symptoms, please do not delay contacting your primary care provider. Keep in mind that this is a rare syndrome; although PIMS can be deadly, the majority of affected children have done well, and treatments are available. Please contact Mrs. Limondin, School Nurse with any questions: [email protected].
HANDWASHING remains the top way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and all viral disease. A simple thing, yet it works to keep your loved ones safe. To be effective, it only takes 20 seconds and five steps: wet, lather, scrub (don’t forget under your nails and any jewelry, and your thumbs), rinse, and dry.
Handwashing with soap and water is best, though HAND SANITIZER is effective when soap and water are not available. Apply a generous drop of hand sanitizer to the palm of your hand and rub it across both hands, front and back, fingertips and thumb, for 20 seconds
As a voluntary public health measure, the CDC recommends that everyone over the age of two wear a cloth face mask inplaces where social distancing is difficult, like stores and pharmacies. Wearing masks can help prevent the transmission of the virus from people who are contagious yet have no symptoms, and who may spread the virus through breathing, talking, or coughing. Any mask will reduce the number of microorganisms spread, and there are many DIY videos on the internet. Search for “2-layer no-sew face mask” for some good options.
